KALAMAZOO, MI – The Kalamazoo Hackett baseball team's jerseys don't have names on the back. If they did, you'd notice a theme. Baseball is a family affair at the Catholic high school. You have the Backman family, with Assistant Coach Daniel Backman and his son Eli Backman. The Higgins family, with Assistant Coach Paul Higgins and his son Kyler Higgins. There are three generations of Verduzcos. There's Coach Smiley Verduzco, his son/Assistant Coach Steve Verduzco – who was a fourth-round pick with Houston in 1993 and played in the minor leagues – and two players/grandsons on the team: Nick and David Verduzco.
